Lamu doesn’t let you rush, and this tour makes sure of that. Walking those narrow streets with a local guide felt less like sightseeing and more like actually being let into someone’s world.

I wasn’t sure what to expect from a walking tour, but this one completely changed how I think about travel. Our guide didn’t just point at buildings — he introduced us to the woodcarvers, the jewellery makers, the families who’ve lived in the same houses for generations. Knowing that my visit directly supported these artisans and kept their crafts going made the whole experience feel meaningful in a way that a regular tour never does. The donkey orphanage stop caught me off guard — I didn’t expect to care as much as I did, but it just added another layer to understanding how life actually works in Lamu. I left feeling like I’d genuinely connected with a place, not just passed through it.

If you’re heading to the Kenyan coast and skipping Lamu, reconsider. And if you’re in Lamu without doing this tour, you’re only seeing the surface. The walk takes you through streets so narrow your shoulders nearly touch the walls on both sides, past workshops where craftsmen are still making things by hand the way their grandparents did. Your guide fills in all the context — the history, the architecture, the little details you’d walk right past on your own. It’s slow, it’s unhurried, and it’s exactly what travel is supposed to feel like.

Honestly one of the most grounding experiences I’ve had traveling in Kenya. Lamu has this rare quality of feeling completely itself, and this tour is the best way to understand why.
