What?
A peaceful canoe ride through the calm waters of Mida Creek, surrounded by lush mangroves and incredible birdlife. Guided by a local bird expert, this experience brings you closer to one of the coast’s most vibrant natural ecosystems.
Where?
Mida Creek, a protected mangrove sanctuary and haven for birdlife along the Kenyan coast.
When?
At sunset, when the creek comes alive with birds and changing colours across the sky.
Why?
Mida Creek is a true sanctuary for birdlife, and there is no better way to experience it than from the water. As the sun begins to set, you will witness flocks in motion, birds feeding and nesting and settling in for the evening. It is peaceful, alive and quietly unforgettable, offering both a sense of calm and a deeper understanding of this unique ecosystem.
How?
Join a guided canoe ride led by a knowledgeable bird expert. Glide through the waters at an easy pace, ask questions, learn about the environment and, if you are feeling adventurous, try steering the canoe in the traditional way.
The canoe is powered by humans with no engine and is silent, therefore the surrounding wildlife and ecosystem remains at peace. Moreover the canoes are handmade and authentic, spreading local practices.
The expert bird guide is from the local area. As demand for this trip increases, he is motivated to empower and spread birding knowledge to his peers.
With a deep love for birds and nature from the locals, especially bird experts, your payment helps fuel conservation and keeping Mida Creek as a pleasant home for the birds.
You will embark the canoe from a community area that relies on tourists for their upkeep. An area kept clean and thriving by the local community.

Meet your specialised guide and ease into the experience as you are introduced to the canoe. Take a moment to get comfortable, settle in and soak up the calm surroundings before setting off.
Glide through the open waters of the creek as the sun begins to lower. Watch flocks of birds fly overhead, spot others feeding, building nests or caring for their young and observe this natural rhythm unfold around you.
As the sky shifts in colour, slow down and take it all in. Feel free to ask your guide questions, learn more about the birdlife and ecosystem, or even try steering the canoe using a traditional pole.
Drift into the mangroves, navigating through narrow channels surrounded by roots and nature. Capture the final moments, soak in the stillness and leave with a deeper appreciation for this unique coastal environment.
4-5 people can fit, though if there are more of you, we can organise extra canoes!
This mostly depends on yourselves, the average time guests spend out on the water is 2 hours.
Yes! A community owned restaurant is situated right there, overlooking the water with a broad-walk and great food.
Not really a big bird fan, but oh wow this trip was spectacular. Seeing the birds in action, picking fish from the water as they fly closely over. The sunset was also unreal and the mangrove ride.
The guide was incredibly knowledgable, he shared so much information and did his very best to show us a great show. Was also a lot of fun taking over and steering the boat. Thank you!
I wasn’t sure what to expect, but this ended up being one of the most peaceful hours I’ve spent in a long time. Gliding through the creek at sunset with a guide who clearly loves those birds as much as the birds love being there — there’s something quietly special about that. I left feeling like I’d actually seen the coast, not just visited it. And knowing the canoe is handmade and that my money goes back into protecting the creek made it feel even more worthwhile.
Honestly one of those experiences you don’t plan for but end up talking about for weeks. We had no idea Mida Creek even existed before this trip. The guide took us out just as the sun was going down and the whole sky turned — we lost count of how many bird species we spotted. Zero engines, zero noise, just the sound of water and wings. Perfect.
We did this with our two kids (9 and 12) and they were completely hooked from the moment we got in the canoe. The guide was brilliant with them — patient, funny, and incredibly knowledgeable. Our eldest tried steering with the pole and was absolutely delighted with himself. It’s rare to find something that genuinely works for both adults and kids, but this did. A proper family memory.
Do this one. Especially if you think you’re not a “bird person” — I’m not, and I still found it completely absorbing. The creek is a protected area and you can feel it; everything is undisturbed and thriving. Drifting through the mangroves at the end as it got dark was something else entirely.
